Blink And Miss Cameos Of Indian Actors In Hollywood Films
Bagging a role in a Hollywood film is considered to be a big deal by Indian actors. While back home they are never satisfied with anything but a lead role in the movie, they don’t might compromising with the length of their role in an international film. True, actors like Irrfan Khan, Om Puri and Aishwarya Rai Bachachan have managed meaty roles for themselves in movies like Jurrasic World, East is East and Pink Panther 2, respectively; but their initiation into the movies abroad was nothing much to write home about.
Just last week, actor Sonam Kapoor became the latest victim of the ire of Twitterati when she was trolled for her 5 second cameo in Coldplay’s latest video; a role she had spoken about at large in the media.
And close to the heels of Indian superstars Priyanka Chopra (playing a baddie in the screen adaptation of Baywatch) and Deepika Padukone (main lead opposite Vin Diesel in XXX: The return of Xander Cage) bagging full-fledged roles in Hollywood movies, we can only hope that these are the roles they make us proud with and not just come and vanish from the screen even before we could say the word ‘popcorn’.
Till that happens, here’s looking at other Indian actors who, even though starred in big Hollywood blockbusters but, had to be satisfied with only one minute of screen time:
1) Amitabh Bachchan (The Great Gatsby)
The great doyen of Indian cinema had to be satisfied with a blink and miss cameo in Baz Luhrmann’s big screen adaptation of The Great Gatsby. He plays the character of a Jewish gambler Meyer Wolfsheim. Certainly, the role does nothing to add to his extensive and excellent body of work.
2) Anupam Kher (Silver Linings Playbook)
Anupam Kher stars as Dr. Patel in the 2012 summer blockbuster Silver Linings Playbook. Directed by David O. Russell, while the movie won Jennifer Lawrence her first Oscar as a leading lady, Anupam Kher had to be satisfied with a tiny bit role in the movie.
3) Ali Fazal (Fast & Furious 7)
Was he really there in the movie? Well, yes he was. With a horrible accent to support, the actor had a role that could have easily been played by any other small time actor in Hollywood. Wonder why they chose to fly all the way to India to cast Ali? And why him?
4) Kabir Bedi (Octopussy)
Indian Actor, Kabir Bedi, starred in the 1983 James Bond movie, Octopussy as the Kamal Khan’s persistent henchman, Gobinda. In his own words the only reason why he joined the star cast of the movie was because the shoot for the movie was taking place in India for the first time and he wanted to brag about the role among his friends and family. A valid reason we say but sir you could have done a better job of it.
5) Irrfan Khan (The Amazing Spider-Man)
When an actor of his talent and caliber goes ahead and does a blink and miss cameo in a movie like The Amazing Spider-Man, it really does break our hearts. Good, he managed to redeem himself with a more substantial role in one of the biggest and highest grossing movies of all time, Jurassic World.
