This Woman From Indian Idol’s Auditions Has Gone Through Nightmarish Torture, But Her Stubborn Determination To Thrive Makes Her An Inspiration
She has no family, no one to call her own. She was independently earning for herself and wanted a happy life. Maybe find a partner to complete herself, she might have thought. Eventually, she did get married, only to change her life and face forever. While we are still shocked by the Bangalore molestation case, the internet is heated up with the debates, another tragic story of a strong woman has hit us. The story that tells us that we are still centuries behind, but her determination to stay strong surpasses all.
Her burnt face speaks of the torment Indian women go through trapped in the evils of dowry and alcoholic partners. In a classic scenario, Dolly Singh agreed to marry this guy who was ardently pursuing her, only to realise later that all he ever wanted was the money her stable job would bring. And an abusive mother-in-law who never accepted her and subsequently gave her a burnt face just set up the plot for a horrendous experience.
Dolly tells about the laborious stay at her in-laws. She was pushed by her mother-in-law, the milk fell into the coal stove and the steam splashed onto her face. She was admitted to the hospital for a long time, soon enough she found out that her husband and in-laws have abandoned her. Even her relatives left her. What Dolly’s story tells us that even if you are independent and earning, your financial status can also render you vulnerable.
She has been gifted with a beautiful voice, and so, auditioned for Indian Idol’s latest season and that is where we saw her. When she tried to get opportunities to sing, she got rejected due to her burnt face. Dolly says, ” Many people have called me to sing in shows, but when they realised that I am not beautiful they eliminated me from their list”.
On asking why she never approached for any legal help, she answered that due to lack of evidence, she had nothing to back up her complain. Now, Dolly is teaching English in a school and moving ahead in her life. However, hundreds and thousands of women still find themselves helpless and doomed. Dolly’s story is a tragic one but an inspiration at the same time as nothing broke her. She stands strong in the faces of those who tried to destroy her once.
