POUT- Here is how and when it started

I was casually surfing the net the other day (as I always do, when in the office), when I came across a term that intrigued my curiosity and I ended up spending the rest of the day researching on the topic. It so turned out that the term is as old as eternity; it’s just thatit wasn’t in much use, up until about a year back when the advent of mobile phones with front facing cameras took place. No, I’m not talking about ‘Selfie’. Oh, come on! You don’t really take me to be That predictable, do you? Today, my friend, we’re gonna talk about the term…wait for it…wait for it… Duckface.;)
Duckface: Suck in the cheeks. Press your lips together, and push them as much out-and-up as you can. The face so contorted is called a duckface.
After referring to eight different physical dictionaries and tens of online portals, I’ve come to the following inferences:
The term is a common Noun.
It is primarily associated with the female of the species.
In absence of congenital natural attributes, they resort to temporary morphing of certain body parts.
Although the ‘why’ may vary, it is mainly to show them as being physicallyattractive according to the false parameters set by the sexists and misogynists of the society.
Miles and miles of romantic songs and poems have been written, on the beauty of smile on a girl’s face. It has been a source of inspiration for innumerable lyricists, and musiciansworldwide. Ironically today, a girl who would otherwise always carry a smile on her face, suddenly choses to morph her face so mercilessly as soon as she sees a camera pointed at her.
Wanting to hear it directly from the horse’s mouth- or in this case, from the ducks’ mouth- I decided to have a focus group. I went ahead and quizzed a few of my female friends, as to why do they do what they do in front of the camera. The crux of their answers was enough to convince me that no one had any clue. While some of them decided to stay with a simple, ‘It looks good’ and ‘It’s the in-thing’, others went into the anatomy of it all and reminded me of Mrs. Goel, my evil Biology teacher from school. It so happens that the duckface makes their lips look fuller, besides making the eyes wider and their cheekbones looking more prominent. My questions, still remained though. Why do they do it? Why not just smile? What is this, if not a desperate attempt to anyhow concur to the set standards of physical beauty?
Although modern-day actors like Megan Fox and Angelina Jolie are the culprits behind reviving and popularizing this strange phenomenon, itis far from new. Based on my research, the credit for starting this fad goes to the yesteryear actor, Marilyn Monroe.
Although, if the innumerable intelligent quotes credited to her floating around the web are any benchmark, she was far too intelligent to have consciously started something like this. I’m sure, she was just trying to throw another one of her super-seductive kisses to the camera. Besides, Marilyn the-epitome-of-beauty Monroe could not have needed to do anything to her face in order to look beautiful, leave alone something as crazy-ass as making a duckface, or as I like to call it, the ‘Pigface’.
Being an optimist, I sincerely hope with all my heart that all that stretching, pulling and pushing of lips, doesn’t push them on the theory of Lamarckism, which says, ‘The growth of an organ is directly proportional to its use’. Remember the Giraffe?
