Here Are The 3 Drop-The-Mic Ways Abhay Deol Slammed Bollywood Celebrities For Promoting Racism
The woke celebrities of Bollywood have decided to be vocal about the blatant racism, sexism, nepotism, etc prevalent in the industry. First, Kangana called out Karan Johar for his favouritism, and now it is Abhay Deol who has spoken against the rampant racism practised and propagated by the media, and the unapologetic participation of celebrities in this power game.
After an ex-BJP MP made a statement with reference to the racist attacks against Nigerians in Greater Noida, a number of debates rose up to discuss the matter. The politician said that if India were a racist country, then we wouldn’t have been living with the south Indians. Connect the dots to understand the racism in this statement. Abhay Deol decided to go back a little and find out how racism doesn’t prevail solely by the virtue of political status quo. He won this round of debate by using these three weapons:
Blunt as a Blade – As a celebrity, an artist enjoys the fame which is unfathomable to us common people. Thus comes the choice to use this influence for good or bad. Deol brings back a number of ad campaigns done by superstars such as Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, John Abraham, Shahid Kapoor, etc. which reinstated the supremacy of white over dark. The actor decided not to mince his words, be it speaking against King Khan or his ex-co-star Sonam Kapoor. He fearlessly centre-staged the hypocrisy of Bollywood celebrities who endorse such regressive ideas for money, and at the same time, speak against it to stay relevant in the society’s changing stance.
Oh So Sarcastic! – Remember Nandita Das? The ‘exotic dusky’ beauty? This is the irony he wanted to convey. Deol, honestly makes it clear that dark/black/dusky is not supposed to be beautiful in India and neither should the actress try to make people realise it. The bitter truth is that we Indians feel troubled accepting the skin colour of the tropics, which is as beautiful as any other light skin tone in the world. It is high time that we get over the fascination with our colonial masters.
Honesty is the only Policy – When Abhay targeted one of his ex-co-stars, Sonam Kapoor, fireworks were evident. Yes, as expected she spoke up but all the wrong words. The actress who has become a representative of the modern and the urban millennials didn’t take long to throw shade on her co-star. She dug out Abhay’s cousin, Esha Deol’s fairness cream ad and asked for his opinion on this. Abhay replied to this in a matter-of-fact fashion and declared that he finds this to be as wrong as the ones he shared himself, and for his views, Sonam can go back to his updates. Ashamed of getting personal in the war that demands compliance, Sonam defended her 10 yr old self and deleted all her tweets.
Mr Deol is on a roll and he is not looking for sparks to create scandals. It is quite clear by his tonality and approach to the matter that all he wants is camaraderie to end racism from our country, one social domain at a time.
