An open Letter To Religious Bigots Who Cannot See Beyond Sania Mirza’s Short Skirt, And Refuse To Acknowledge Her Unparalleled Sportsmanship
No matter how talented she is. No matter how many laurels she brings for this country. No matter how many times she gets injured while playing for her country’s pride. No matter how hard she works to stay on the top. She will always be a woman to us! She is neither a tennis player nor a breathing human shape who is capable of taking decisions for herself.
Sania Mirza has been seen struggling throughout her career to claim the identity of an ace tennis player, not a doll for religious bigotry. She has had a fatwa issued against her short skirt. She faced sexist and Islamophobic jibes when she got married to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik.
Either she has been a blasphemous Muslim woman who doesn’t scrutinize her skirt’s length or an Indian married to a Pakistani. When will the time finally arrive, when she will be seen only in the light of her excellent game. She is a no. 2 double player in the world right now. This should be the reason for her to stay in the news, but instead, we will make a mountain out of a molehill simply because we are good at it?
Are we bored? Or maybe, just, “intolerant”. A simple picture posted in a beautiful red dress suddenly fetched her immense hatred and unneeded advice on how a ‘Muslim woman’ should dress. This is the second time in few months when a sports person is bashed for something that has nothing to do with their game or strategy. Earlier, Mohammad Shami, in a most matter-of-fact way shut down the trolls who questioned his wife’s sleeveless attire.
I admire Sania Mirza for handling the media and hatred with the ease of breeze. But is it really as easy as it seems? She has decided to be indifferent to media and haters, but deep down it does irk every woman to defend her choice of clothes, partner, career, etc. How does it make any sense to justify your personal choice?
Why does your pea-sized brain refuse to understand basic concepts? Neither her fully clad body going to please your god, nor it is going to bring any ‘enlightenment’. A pervert can still peep inside the ‘protective’ layers of a Burkha, and rapist can tear it in a second. On the top of everything, religious bigotry and moral policing on a sportsperson is as redundant as your unproductive existence.
