5 Myth About Outer Space Only Science Junkies Can Bust
Here there, Science Junkies!
Just sending across a thumbs up because you know it all already. However, this article is for the other kinds, the curious kinds. You think you have your facts rights? Well, let us give you a reality check about the ‘facts’ you take for granted. We will bust each and every myth, one at a time, starting with the most mind-boggling one :
1. Earth Is Not Round
This is what we remember of our teachers telling us that earth is round. Yes, it is not flat like the olden days ‘scholars’ used to think, but the earth is not round as well. The shape is known as Oblate Spheroid, which would be close to the shape of a potato.
2. Mercury Is Not The Hottest Planet
If you think that proximity to the Sun decides the temperature of a planet, then I feel happy to educate you on this misconception. Mercury might be the closest one to the Sun, but Venus is the hottest planet due to the atmosphere of Carbon-dioxide.
3. Sun Is Not All Fire And Stuff
The popular culture has made us to believe that the Sun is a fire vomiting fierce ball. That is not true at all. The star is actually a glowing ball due to the nuclear reactions on its surface. One fact remains undisputed though, Sun is indeed fierce.
4. Earth Is Not Closer To The Sun During Summer
Another proximity-to-the-sun myth has moulded our concept of summer on the earth. Now that you know that the earth is not round and proximity to the sun doesn’t affect the temperature of a planet, add this to your knowledge that it is the orbital axis that causes summer on the planet. The axis points towards the Sun and we experience the hot waves.
5. Your Body Will Not Explode Without A Spacesuit In Outer Space
Again, the popular culture tells us the body of an astronaut will explode if he removes his spacesuit. However, that is not true. In reality, due to the decreased outer pressure and lack of oxygen, the lungs and heart will shut down. Equally horrifying though!
